The term Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is frequently applied to geographically or spatially oriented computer technology, integrated systems used in substantive applications and, more recently, a new discipline which is generating massive interest world-wide. The GIS field is characterised by a great diversity of applications and concepts developed in many areas - computer science, graphics, database technology, statistics, mathematics, surveying, cartography, agriculture, geology, geography, resource management and decision-making, to name a few.
Geographical Information Systems are computer based tools to capture, manipulate, process and display spatial or geo-referenced data. They contain both geometry and attribute data and are distinct in their capabilities to perform spatial operations of integration. The real power of GIS is in the organisation of Spatial Information Systems and orienting it towards decision-making or resource management. The design and analysis of Spatial Information Systems is an involved activity and requires a good understanding of the concepts of GIS, maps and cartography, resources modelling and management, databases, etc. With an interaction of different concepts, there is much to be done to make GIS useful in a routine manner addressing day-to-day problems.

                       Applications

Agriculture

Remote-sensing data is used for crop inventory, assessment and production forecasting.
Soil

Satellite data is also used for soil mapping. It is used to study crop suitability area detection.
Watershed Management

Remote-sensing data is used to generate baseline information on soils, existing land-use and land-cover, lineaments and drainage pattern. These data is integrated with water level fluctuations, slope, rock types and geomorphology in GIS environment to provide groundwater potential zonation map.
Environment

Land-use and land-cover maps prepared from satellite data are used for detecting area suitability for industrial usage.
Exploration

3D seismic models prepared from two way time data is useful in oil and gas exploration. Gridded geo-chemical maps are used for mineral exploration. Demo
Forestry

Change in forest cover can be monitored using satellite data. Forest management can be carried out using land-use and land cover maps generated from satellite data. Demo
Telecommunication

Land-use and digital terrain models help in network designing visualization and site selection in telecommunication. Demo
Urban Planing

Remote-sensing data is used to study urban sprawl, land-use and perspective plan generation.
Natural Disaster management

Remote sensing inputs have been used for many disasters including drought, flood, earthquake, cyclone, landslide and volcanoes.

Drought Monitoring: IRS WiFS (Wide Field Sensor) derived (Normalised Differentiation Vegetation index) is used to monitor drought situations

Flood monitoring: Satellite data has been effectively used to provide comprehensive, multidata, reliable and timely information on flood inundated and drainage congestion, extent of damage to crop, river configuration, silt deposits etc and vulnerable areas of bank erosion, watershed characteristics and land-use and land cover in command areas.
Coastal Zone Management

Satellite data is used to study shoreline stability, sustainable development of island ecosystem, marine pollution, transport of sediments and planktonic dynamics. Fishery forecast can be also developed using OCEANSAT (IRS P4) data.

We have extensive in-house facilities for digitising and for editing maps, including an A0 size CalComp digitiser. Maps can be digitisd by us upto detail. Using Scanning and heads-up digitising, we can convert imagery or paper maps into vector format. These vector maps can be further Geo-referenced by us, either by address or by using the latest satellite imagery.

We can provide the following maps:
